INSTRUMENT:
PROGRAMME:FP6-LIFESCIHEALTH
The EC currently undertakes most networking through physical meetings (personal, conferences, trade shows etc.). The same is also true for NCPs and IRCs (direct meetings and workshops) and ETI projects, which also facilitate physical networking. Physical networking activities are popular, especially amongst Academia and larger organisations, who normally have the appropriate resources to support these, both in terms of sufficient staff and travel budgets and have a tradition of participation in such activities. However, in the SME world things are quite different, as they have different agendas than Academia (ROI prevails) and often do not have enough resources (both time and money) to perform networking to the desired extent and participate in activities, where academia members attend regularly. It implies that both sides miss out on many collaboration opportunities. The information age has delivered a range of technologies that make effective online collaboration a reality, especially when addressing the needs of SMEs. Broader networking already yields dividends in accelerating the transfer of new technologies from Academia to the SMEs in many aspects and this project aims to effectively leverage stable Internet technologies and methods to take maximum advantage of these tools and approaches, in order to address this strategic objective for the benefit of all parties. SpidERA for LIFE aims at `bringing together' SMEs and Academia from the life science and health sectors in an innovative, cost effective and highly efficient way. SpidERA for LIFE will utilise the new concept of web-based online networking coupled with social network analysis capability, to facilitate and promote the collaboration between SMEs and Academia with the ultimate objective of improving the health of European citizens and increasing the competitiveness of European health-related industries and businesses, while addressing global health issues including emerging epidemics.'
